Congenital Chikungunya Presenting With Centrofacial Pigmentation

Sudha Rudrappa, Hamsa Mahadevaiah, Nandhini Lakshminarayan

Abstract

The virus that causes chikungunya is an arbovirus, which spreads through a mosquito bite. Although rare, there is a risk of transmission of chikungunya from the mother to the fetus. Here, we have described a case series of 6 neonates born to chikungunya-infected mothers. The characteristic centrofacial hyperpigmentation led to the diagnosis and analysis of the disease in both the mothers and the neonates. These neonates in the later course developed features such as encephalopathy and sepsis. All the neonates recovered with supportive treatment. Hyperpigmentation reduced over a few weeks.
