Genesis and Progress

Perinatology - Journal of Perinatal and Neonatal Care is a quarterly journal published by The Himalaya Drug Company (Bengaluru, Karnataka, India). Perinatology is indexed in Embase (Excerpta Medica), CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature), and SCOPUS databases. In India, Perinatology is one of the few journals solely dedicated to the specialty of perinatal medicine. Furthermore, there are just a handful of journals like this, worldwide.

The inaugural issue of Perinatology was brought out in the last quarter of 1998. Initially, Perinatology was a bimonthly journal published by Prism Books Private Limited (Bengaluru, Karnataka, India). Perinatology was released as Volume 1, Number 1, during January–February 1999. The very fact that Perinatology has lasted for 2 decades is testimony to its popularity and reliability as a professional journal.

The launch of Perinatology - Journal of Perinatal and Neonatal Care was hailed by the medical fraternity as a milestone in the field of perinatal medicine. The medical personnel involved in the care of the mother, fetus, and newborn should work in tandem and coordinate during the antenatal period itself, and in many instances even before conception, to ensure an uneventful pregnancy and delivery and a healthy newborn. In this journey, obstacles should be tackled with collective and collaborative efforts.

The objective behind Perinatology’s inception was to have a common forum for exchanging ideas, experiences, and knowledge and facilitating the dissemination of clinical learnings from various facets of perinatal medicine. Perinatology has fulfilled these expectations and has done much more.

The Himalaya Drug Company took over Perinatology in 2009 after Prism Books Private Limited exited from medical publishing. Since then, Perinatology has undergone tremendous uplifts in terms of quality of the content and robustness of the production process to match international standards. The fact that many authors, affiliated to universities and hospitals of national and international repute across the world, have published more than once and are continuing to publish in Perinatology is testimony to Perinatology’s standards. Currently, Perinatology is reaching more than 13,000 doctors across India and other countries. The launch of this exclusive website is another milestone for Perinatology. We now plan to get Perinatology indexed in PubMed.
