Abstract
Aim: To assess the neurodevelopment of preterm neonates and factors contributing to impaired neurodevelopment in them and to study the effect of Developmental Supportive Care (DSC) on preterm neonates
Materials and Methods: This review examined studies or research articles that explored the theoretical basis of factors contributing to impaired neurodevelopment in preterm neonates. The review also examined the effect of DSC and Neonatal Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program (NIDCAP) interventions.
Results: The factors that contribute to impaired neurodevelopment in preterm neonates include environmental and care-related factors. The DSC and NIDCAP interventions have documented the effect on neurodevelopment and changes in behavior, learning, and intelligence. However, more scientific research is required in this area.
Conclusion: The professional practice of DSC requires continual education, in-depth research and refinement, and a structured care environment that focuses on the holistic development of the neonate.
