Abstract

A vein of Galen malformation (VOGM) is a rare vascular anomaly that occurs mostly in neonates and could cause congestive heart failure. In the past, surgical intervention was considered for managing VOGM. However, treatment outcomes were poor. Currently, endovascular embolization is the suitable treatment approach available for VOGM.

Here, we present a case of a neonate who presented with signs of a congenital cardiac disease. Echocardiogram indicated a 2-mm patent ductus arteriosus with a dilated right atrium/right ventricle. A neurosonogram showed a vein of Galen arteriovenous malformation. Hence, it is vital to consider an intracranial cause in the differential diagnosis of congestive heart failure in neonates.
