Mishu Mangla, Naina Kumar, Harpreet Kaur, Deepak Singla

Abstract

Background: Although the diagnosis of hydrops fetalis in the first-trimester ultrasonogram is rare, it has been found to have an even stronger association with adverse outcomes compared with that of increased nuchal translucency.

Aim: To compile the available literature regarding early-onset hydrops fetalis and determine whether the etiopathology and clinical outcomes are the same as those of late-onset hydrops fetalis

Materials and Methods: A systematic review of all cases published as first-trimester hydrops fetalis was conducted on the assumption that the causes of hydrops fetalis are different in the first trimester than in late pregnancy.

Results and Discussion: The relative distribution of causes leading to hydrops fetalis differs in early and late gestation, with chromosomal anomalies being the predominant cause in the first trimester. Patients should be counseled regarding the poor prognosis of early-onset hydrops fetalis.
