Abstract

The co-occurrence of congenital goiter and congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is rare in neonates. Etiology in most such cases remains idiopathic despite extensive workup. The antenatal diagnostic algorithm and management guidelines for these conditions, in neonates, need updating.

A full-term, female neonate presented with swelling over the anterior aspect of the neck along with stridor. The neonate’s hearing assessment results were abnormal. The ultrasonogram was suggestive of a grossly enlarged thyroid gland. The technetium 99m thyroid scintigram revealed diffusely increased trapping function in both the lobes.

Prompt diagnosis and hormone replacement therapy for CH are essential to prevent adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes in neonates.
