Abstract
Mucormycosis is an invasive, opportunistic fungal infection that affects both adults and children. Neonatal mucormycosis is a very rare clinical entity; the cases reported thus far presented with gastrointestinal infection followed by cutaneous manifestation.
Here, we report a case of neonatal mucormycosis with a review of the literature.
Our case was a 23-day-old female neonate with rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis confirmed by both histopathologic and culture studies. However, due to delayed diagnosis, despite our best efforts to treat, the neonate died. We opine that strong suspicion and early aggressive management with appropriate antifungal therapy, with or without surgical intervention, is required for saving the lives of neonates.
