Pleural Effusion With Nonimmune Hydrops With Down Syndrome

Abhishek Paul, Sanjeeva Reddy

Abstract

Chylothorax is characterized by an abnormal accumulation of lymphatic fluid within the pleural space. This is the most common cause of pleural effusion in neonates. This condition is treated by draining the excess fluid using a chest tube, medications such as Octreotide, and through surgical intervention.

In this case report, we discuss about a male neonate who presented with hydrops fetalis with bilateral pleural effusion. The neonate was managed with both noninvasive and invasive ventilation methods, chest tube insertion, and Octreotide infusion. The neonate responded well to the treatment and was stabilized, and hence, was discharged on home oxygen support.

Chylothorax should be considered in any neonate presenting pleural effusion.
