Understanding Adoption in India
Shaibya Saldanha
Adoption means the process through which the adopted child becomes the lawful child of the adoptive parents, with all the rights, privileges, and responsibilities that are attached to a biological child.
Adoption can be a tough decision to make. A person may not even be sure if he/she wants to take that step. It is advisable that prospective adoptive parent(s) (PAP) speak with other parents who have adopted to understand what they went through as well as with other support groups such as the following:

Counseling could also help in taking a decision. The purpose here is to know if adoption is really what one may want to build one’s family.
Once registered as a PAP, the waiting period may be 6 months to 2 years, depending on the state in which one has applied. The time that is no less for a biological child, 3 to 12 months of trying for pregnancy and another 9 months of pregnancy itself, helps in bringing clarity to the decision to adopt, because the decision is for a lifetime!
