Inherited Thrombophilia

Kashish Goyal, Sunil Gothwal

Abstract

Inherited thrombophilia is rare in neonates; however, over time, tertiary care centers have been noticing an increase in its incidence. The peak incidence of thromboembolic events in the pediatric age group occurs in neonates. A Doppler ultrasound is commonly used for the diagnosis of thrombophilia. The treatment for thromboembolic events during the neonatal period remains controversial.

In this case report, we present a case of a male neonate with inherited thrombophilia delivered by a primigravida. The neonate was on ventilator support and was treated with surfactants, inotropes, and antibiotics. During the hospital course, the neonate developed progressive blackish discoloration of the limbs. The neonate was treated with low-molecular-weight heparin.
